Avocados are one of the world’s healthiest foods and are pretty delicious too. If it’s something you haven’t tried definitely put it on your next shopping list for you and your baby to enjoy.
What are avocados?
Avocados are botanically classed as a large berry that contains a single seed. The tree is native to Mexico and Central America in the flowering plant family along with cinnamon and bay laurel.
What are their health benefits?
In pregnancy, the potassium content helps control blood pressure and folate is crucial for cell repair during pregnancy.
For babies they help with brain and physical development.
And for adults they offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving; are low in sugar, high in fibre, high in good fats which can make you feel fuller longer and can lower high cholesterol. Win win!
But what to do with them?
Some of my favourite avocado recipes are;
- ABC Salad – avocado, bacon and chicken with a nice green leafy salad is absolutely delicious. The crunchy texture of the leafs makes a great contrast to the smooth salad and salty bacon gives it a lovely taste.
- Guacamole – guacamole is super easy to make all you need to do is grind your avocado with some oil, salt and pepper. Get some Dorito type crisps and top with your guacamole, salsa and grated cheese to make your own cinema style nachos (at a fraction of the price!)
- On toast – slices of avocado on toast with a poached egg on top is absolutely divine, and a lot healthier option than bacon which you’d normally have.
For babies, try mashing it and spoon feeding, it’s great for weaning baby’s as you can easily smooth out the lumps and it doesn’t have a strong taste. As baby gets bigger just smooth it out less leaving some lumps whilst they’re learning to chew, you can then work your way up to giving your baby slices and chunks making a great healthy finger food.
